This is an example air cooled system, as demonstrated in our shop. Air cooled lighting reduces the ambient temperature around lamps and therefore allow plants to grow closer to the light (and collect more energy for growing) without getting burnt. Hot air surrounding the lamp can be drawn away, which indirectly allows plants to grow faster. Air cooled lighting also allows the extraction and / or filtering of poor quality air. High power lighting requires high power lamps, suitable reflectors and ballasts. Air cooled lighting also requires ducting, spigots, fans and filters. (Filter and additional ducting not shown.)
One ballast is connected to each lamp in an air cooled reflector. The ballast provides circuitry to enable the correct starting and operation of the high powered lights. The ballasts for each lamp are placed on shelving, away from potential water spills. Two air cooled reflectors (also known as air cooled hoods) are suspended by chain. Air cooled reflectors have a small hole in the top suitable for 75mm ducting. (If, required, sound-proof ducting is available to reduce noise.) The air cooled reflectors are connected, via ducting, to a two way spigot manifold, which is also suspended by chain (centre of picture) and connected to a fan which is also suspended by chain (looped chain in picture). The purpose of the spigot is to allow multiple reflectors to be used with one fan. The spigot also allows numerous reflectors (with 75mm ducting) to be connected to a fan of a larger diameter. Spigots are available for use with two, four, six and eight reflectors and are sized for use with appropriately powered fans. Please contact Esoteric Hydroponics for further details and suitability. The fan would typically be ducted to a carbon filter and optionally ducted outside the growroom.
